Nancy’s Story: Stronger, More Confident, and Looking Forward to the Future

One of the greatest parts of coaching is watching someone discover what they are truly capable of even long after they thought certain things were no longer possible for them.

Nancy’s story is a perfect example of that.

She began personal training at CrossFit Dwell in May 2025 with a simple goal: improve her strength, mobility, and flexibility. Like many people walking through our doors for the first time, she wasn’t looking to compete or chase extreme fitness goals. She just wanted to feel better and move better.

What she found was something even bigger.

Taking the First Step

Starting something new can feel intimidating at any age. Many people worry they are too out of shape, too stiff, or dealing with too many aches and pains to begin.

Nancy understands that feeling well, but she also understands the power of saying yes anyway.

She shared that beginning personal training wasn’t quite what she expected.

“No — it has been better than I ever expected. I feel 10 years younger and have hope of being able to do everything I want to do again in my advanced age years.”

That word — hope — matters.

So many adults quietly accept declining strength, limited mobility, or chronic discomfort as an unavoidable part of aging. Nancy decided not to accept that story. Instead, she chose to take action.

And that decision changed everything.

Small Improvements That Add Up

Fitness transformations don’t usually happen overnight. They happen through consistent effort, small wins, and showing up again and again.

Since starting personal training, Nancy has experienced steady and meaningful progress.

“I am stronger, more flexible, and have better balance, with ongoing improvement.”

These changes may sound simple, but they impact everyday life in powerful ways. Strength makes daily tasks easier. Flexibility reduces stiffness and discomfort. Balance helps prevent falls and builds confidence moving through the world.

For Nancy, the biggest victory hasn’t been a single workout or milestone. It has been her consistency.

“I am most proud of consistently showing up and allowing myself to be challenged during my workouts at the gym.”

That willingness to show up, even when workouts feel hard or progress feels slow, is where real change happens.

Consistency always beats perfection.

Facing Challenges Head-On

Every fitness journey includes obstacles. Nancy’s biggest challenge has been working through physical limitations, particularly weak and achy knees.

Rather than avoiding movement, Nancy learned how to train safely and intelligently around those limitations. Through scaled exercises, strength work, and gradual progressions, she has continued building resilience and confidence in her body.

This is one of the most important lessons we try to teach at CrossFit Dwell: you don’t need a perfect body to start. Movement itself is often the path to feeling better.

Nancy proved that progress is possible even when challenges exist even when life throws unexpected setbacks your way.

In fact, she continued training with remarkable dedication.

“I am so proud of myself for taking that first step to show up, and for my consistency in the gym, even with a broken wrist and a cast.”

That level of commitment says a lot about her mindset. Instead of stopping completely, she adapted. She kept moving. She stayed engaged in the process.

And the results followed.

Training for Life — Not Just the Gym

One thing we love about Nancy’s goals is how real and meaningful they are.

She isn’t focused on numbers on a barbell or leaderboard rankings. Her goals are centered around independence, freedom, and family.

Looking ahead, she shared:

“I want to be able to get on the floor and up from the floor with minimal effort. I also want to be able to skip again. Being able to play with my future grandchildren is very important to me.”

These goals reflect what functional fitness is truly about: preparing your body for life outside the gym.

Being able to get up from the floor easily is strongly connected to long-term independence. Moving freely enough to skip again represents confidence and joy in movement. And preparing to play with future grandchildren speaks to something even deeper: investing in the future version of yourself.

Nancy isn’t just training for today. She’s training for the life she wants years from now.

The Power of Encouragement and Community

Behind every success story is support.

Nancy credits much of her journey to encouragement from both her family and her coaches.

“I am so happy that I listened to my daughter’s unending plea for me to start lifting weights.”

Sometimes the people who love us see our potential before we do.

She also shared gratitude for the coaching team:

“My trainers have encouraged me, cheered me on, challenged me, and believed that I could accomplish things I never thought I could do at 59 and 60 years old.”

That belief matters. When someone realizes they are capable of more than they assumed, confidence grows far beyond the gym.

Nancy also expressed heartfelt appreciation for her daughter:

“I am also very thankful for my daughter, Annmarie, for encouraging me, loving me, and not giving up on me!”

Fitness journeys are rarely solo efforts. Support, accountability, and encouragement help people keep going especially in the early stages when change feels uncertain.

Advice Worth Hearing

When asked what advice she would give to her past self or someone considering starting their own fitness journey, Nancy’s answer was simple and powerful:

“Don’t wait. Show up for yourself consistently and don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone.”

Those words capture the heart of her story.

Waiting rarely makes starting easier. Confidence doesn’t come before action. It grows because of action.

Nancy didn’t begin as the strongest or most flexible version of herself. She became stronger and more capable because she started.
