Michael started his CrossFit journey back in November 2018, motivated by a desire to try something different from his usual workouts. He was looking for a unique blend of cardio and weightlifting. Watching the CrossFit Games on TV sealed the deal—it looked challenging, exciting, and like the kind of environment he wanted to be a part of.
What he discovered when he joined was not what he expected—but in the best way possible. “I was expecting high-tier movements with heavy weights, but instead, I found scalable movements with manageable weights,” Michael shared. “And the welcoming community was something I had never experienced before.”
For many people, the idea of starting CrossFit can be intimidating, but Michael’s story shows how accessible it can be. CrossFit isn’t about jumping straight into advanced techniques or heavy weights; it’s about meeting you where you are and helping you grow from there.
Strength, Skills, and a Whole New Perspective
Over the years, Michael has experienced incredible transformations—both physically and mentally. “Literally everything has changed,” he said. CrossFit has helped him gain strength and achieve all-time personal records (PRs). But it’s not just about the numbers on the barbell; it’s also about the skills he’s developed.
“I’ve gained new skills like double-unders, muscle-ups, handstand walks, and even pegboard climbs. I could go on for days about this,” Michael said. Skills that once seemed unattainable are now part of his fitness routine—and that’s a testament to his hard work and dedication.
CrossFit has also taught Michael the importance of nutrition. “My understanding of how to fuel my body has completely changed,” he explained. When you’re pushing your body to its limits, proper nutrition becomes key. It’s not just about working out; it’s about taking care of yourself holistically.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Victories
Every fitness journey comes with its ups and downs, and Michael’s is no different. While he has competed in several local CrossFit competitions such as The Valentine Massacre and Festivus Games, what is his proudest achievement so far? Running his first half marathon. That’s right—CrossFit prepared him not only for functional fitness but also for endurance challenges outside the gym. Crossing that finish line was a moment of pride and proof that his training had paid off.
But not everything has been smooth sailing. Michael faced a significant challenge when he suffered a partially torn lat. It was a frustrating and painful set-back. Coming back from that injury required patience, determination, and a willingness to rebuild. “It’s okay to take a step back and go back to the basics,” he advised. “You won’t get very far with a weak foundation and a big ego.”
Big Goals for the Future
Michael isn’t stopping anytime soon. His goals are as ambitious as ever. He’s aiming to join the 1,000-pound club (a milestone for combined lifts in the squat, bench press, and deadlift). He’s also setting his sights on triathlons and Ironman competitions. And while the CrossFit Open’s top 25% goal might no longer be available, his drive to compete remains strong.
Setting goals like these keeps Michael motivated, but he’s learned an important lesson along the way: consistency is key. Motivation will ebb and flow, but building solid routines is what keeps you moving forward. He has been showing up at the gym 5-6 days each week the entire time he has been a member.
Words of Wisdom for Beginners
If Michael could give advice to his past self—or anyone considering starting their fitness journey—it would be this:
- Start with the basics. Don’t rush into advanced movements; focus on building a solid foundation.
- Strive for progress, not perfection. “Strive to be 1% better, but it’s okay to mess up,” Michael said. Every small step adds up over time.
- Stay consistent. Motivation might come and go, but routines will carry you through.
One quote that inspires Michael and keeps him focused is, “Nothing is given. Everything is earned.” This mindset has helped him to achieve his goals and push through challenges. It’s a reminder that hard work and dedication pay off in the end.
