How Personal Training Helped Kristie Eliminate Pain and Build Strength for Life

When Kristie joined CrossFit Dwell in January 2024, she had one primary goal: to gain overall body strength. As a nurse in a hospital and a lover of outdoor activities like hiking, Kristie’s busy and active lifestyle demanded a strong, healthy body. But she was facing some tough challenges.

Persistent joint discomfort and increasing pain in her foot and ankle were interfering with her day-to-day life. The pain was so intense that even standing in the morning after a full night’s sleep was difficult. Recognizing that these issues stemmed from weakness, Kristie decided it was time to take action. That’s when she turned to CrossFit Dwell for help—and what a year it’s been.

Why She Joined

Kristie started her journey in group classes but eventually transitioned to personal training, where she worked closely with Coach Lauren. Reflecting on her decision to join, she explained:

“I wanted to be strong enough to carry my scuba tank. But my joints kept giving me problems. Then, pain in my foot and ankle made even standing unbearable. I knew it was because I was weak.”

Kristie didn’t just want temporary relief; she wanted to address the root of the problem. Her experience as a nurse gave her insight into the importance of building strength to protect against injuries and chronic pain. Strength and mobility aren’t just about fitness—they’re about living life fully and pain-free.

Her Experience at CrossFit Dwell

Starting CrossFit can feel intimidating, but Kristie found that her expectations were not only met but exceeded.

“The classes made me laugh because I’d think, ‘You just think I can do that!’ But most of the time, I could. And when I couldn’t, it was modified so I could still succeed. I never worried about being asked to do anything unsafe. You understood that I wasn’t in my twenties anymore.”

Kristie appreciated the understanding and expertise of the coaches, who always prioritized her safety while challenging her appropriately. This supportive environment was a game-changer, helping her rebuild her confidence while working toward her goals.

What’s Changed?

Kristie has experienced significant physical changes since joining CrossFit Dwell. The transformation has been more than just visible—it’s been life-changing.

  • Pain Relief: One of Kristie’s most notable victories is that her foot, ankle, and back pain are completely gone. Adding targeted exercises for core and leg strength not only addressed her pain but also prevented it from returning.
  • Increased Strength: Tasks that once felt overwhelming are now manageable. From pushing heavy hospital beds at work to hiking with less fatigue, Kristie’s daily life has been transformed.
  • Greater Confidence: While Kristie lovingly refers to her sessions with Coach Lauren as “torture,” the results speak for themselves. She’s more capable and confident in her abilities than ever before.

Her Proud Moments

When asked about her biggest accomplishments, Kristie didn’t hesitate:

“I can move the heavy beds at the hospital without feeling like I’m going to die.”

This simple yet powerful statement highlights the real-world impact of her training. The strength she’s gained through sled pushes and other exercises directly supports her physically demanding job, making her workday easier and less taxing.

Another proud moment for Kristie is how much easier hiking has become. Even her hiking buddy has noticed a difference! What once felt like a challenge is now a source of joy and relaxation.

Looking Ahead

Kristie is excited for what’s to come. She’s preparing for a dream trip to Paris in April, where she plans to take a bicycle tour of Versailles. Her goal is to be strong and fit enough to keep up without feeling fatigued.

“I don’t want to be the out-of-shape American,” she joked, but her determination is no laughing matter. She’s also making small but impactful changes to her diet, such as reducing her sugar intake and replacing sweets with fruit and protein snacks.

Overcoming Challenges

For Kristie, time management has been the most difficult aspect of her fitness journey. With 12-hour shifts three to four days a week, finding time to work out can be tough. But she’s learned to work around her schedule, focusing on showing up when she can.

Her Advice to You

Kristie’s journey has taught her that starting is the hardest part.

“Show up. When you’re sleepy, tired, or grumpy, just get to the gym. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Once you’re there, let the instructors help you start. You will feel better afterwards.”

Her professional experience as a nurse has also reinforced the importance of staying active as we age:
