How CrossFit Helped Sharon Get Stronger After 65: Lifting Grandkids, Yardwork, and Better Health

We are always proud to celebrate the health journeys of our members. Today, we are honored to share the story of Sharon, who proves that it’s never too late to get stronger, feel better, and live life to the fullest.

Getting Stronger at 65

Sharon joined CrossFit Dwell in December 2022 shortly after her daughter-in-law, Lauren, and friend, Natalie, became the owners. Her goals were simple yet powerful: she wanted to be strong enough to lift her grandchildren, do yardwork without pain, and strengthen her legs. Like many people starting something new, she wasn’t sure what to expect. She had heard that CrossFit was intense but also scalable to different abilities. Still, there was a little doubt—could she really do it?

Today, almost three years later, Sharon is living proof that not only could she do it, but she could thrive.

Real Changes That Matter

Sharon started noticing changes within just a few weeks of joining. Her legs felt stronger, her muscles felt firmer, and her body overall felt more capable. Everyday activities that used to leave her sore and tired became easier.

“I can lift my 4-year-old grandson without a problem now,” Sharon says proudly. “Helping with events at church, lifting cases of water and drinks, pushing heavy carts, and working in the yard—all of it has become easier. Even my posture has improved!”

Beyond the physical changes, Sharon feels a renewed sense of confidence and energy in her daily life. Things that once seemed hard or exhausting are now manageable and even enjoyable.

Sticking With It—and Loving It

One of Sharon’s proudest achievements isn’t a number on a barbell—it’s her commitment.

“I wasn’t sure if I would stick with it,” she admits. “But I have, and I plan to continue. I’m proud that I do what I can and that I’m taking care of myself as I grow older. I do this for myself, but also for my loved ones.”

Sharon’s mindset is something we admire deeply. Her journey reminds us that success isn’t about being the strongest or fastest. It’s about showing up, doing your best, and staying committed to your health and your future.

Facing Challenges with Courage

Of course, it hasn’t always been easy. Sharon admits that remembering all the different movements can be a challenge. Coordination doesn’t always come naturally to her, but she never gives up.

“The coaches are great at demonstrating each movement before the workout and giving individual help as needed,” she says. “That support makes all the difference.”

Goals for the Future

Looking ahead, Sharon has big goals. She would love to eventually do strict pull-ups, push-ups, box jumps, and climb a rope—all without scaling. She’s not chasing the heaviest weights or the fastest times. Her focus is on improving her form, completing her workouts, and continuing to get stronger every day.

Words of Wisdom

If Sharon could talk to her past self—or anyone who is thinking about starting their own fitness journey—she would say this:

“I wish I had started earlier, but I learned it’s never too late. I began my journey at 65. I’m nearly 68 now and feel better and stronger than ever. The members and coaches at CrossFit Dwell want you to succeed. They are encouraging and accepting of all levels of ability. If they weren’t, I probably wouldn’t have continued. I’m so glad I did.”

In fact, experts agree that starting strength training later in life can be one of the best decisions you make for your health. Read more about that in this article, “The Power of CrossFit for the Aging Athlete: Strength, Longevity, and Community.”

Everyday Strength, Everyday Life

Before CrossFit, Sharon’s main source of exercise was working in the yard, keeping up with her sons, and doing short morning workouts. But as she got older, those activities became more difficult. After working outside, she would be sore for days. Carrying her grandson and getting up from the floor were no longer easy.

Now, Sharon feels strong and capable. She still does her morning workouts at home, but she also comes to CrossFit Dwell at least three days a week—four when she can. The workouts have made a huge difference in her life.

“Everything I do now is easier,” Sharon says. “Lifting my grandkids, playing on the floor and getting up, carrying groceries, working in the yard—it’s all easier. I feel healthier and stronger. I can even help others who might need a hand.”

Regular strength training, like the workouts Sharon does at CrossFit Dwell, is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for adults over 65 to maintain independence and improve quality of life.

At CrossFit Dwell, we see this kind of real, life-changing strength every day, and Sharon’s story reminds us why we do what we do.
