This weekend, 10 of our athletes at CrossFit Dwell competed in Festivus Games. Festivus Games is marketed as “feats of strength for the rest of us.” The idea is that any athlete, whether just beginning and up to the intermediate level, can compete in these games without needing to scale (or modify) the movements. There are other competitions available for more advanced athletes, as well, whether hosted by local gyms or larger events such as the CrossFit Games.
From the novice to the athlete who competes in CrossFit Games, why would an athlete want to compete? What are the benefits of doing so?
First, training for a competition can instill a sense of purpose and motivation. Because of the accountability needed to prepare for an event, athletes are likely to stay disciplined in their workout schedule and their nutrition plan. This discipline can lead to significant improvements in overall fitness levels.
Another reason to compete is that it provides a way for athletes to challenge themselves against others and to set new personal records. Healthy competition fosters a sense of community, encourages good sportsmanship, and promotes a supportive environment for participants to learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Plus, it is just plain fun!
Third, CrossFit competitions incorporate a wide range of physical challenges that test the athletes strength, endurance, agility, and mental toughness. All this exposure helps athletes identify their own strengths and weaknesses. This helps them to tailor their training to help them improve their overall performance. For example, if there is a need to become better at pull ups, they can train that movement. If there is a need to increase strength with barbell movements, they can add strength training to their plan.
Community is a big deal in CrossFit. Our competitions bring together athletes from different backgrounds and skill levels. This fosters a sense of community. It allows athletes to connect with like-minded people, share experiences, and learn from more seasoned athletes and coaches. This, in turn, increases the athlete’s knowledge and the support network they enjoy.
Finally, participating in a competition can be an empowering experience. It provides a sense of accomplishment to the athlete, boosting their self-confidence. Of course, overcoming physical and mental challenges during the competition, just like during a tough workout in the gym, can help athletes develop resilience, mental fortitude, and a stronger belief in what they are capable of doing. This can positively impact their performance not only in future competitions and every day workouts, but also in their everyday life. It can shift their mindset!
Ultimately, competing in competitions can cultivate a sense of personal achievement and self-belief. It fosters resilience and mental fortitude. Beyond the physical gains, which are important, it leads to holistic growth that imparts beneficial lessons that are applicable to future workouts and competitions and to everyday life. Additionally, the sense of community and the support of fellow athletes developed during these events contribute to a lasting sense of camaraderie and shared accomplishment among the participants.
