When Karen walked through the doors of CrossFit Dwell in August 2023, she was not just looking for a place to work out. She was looking for connection, community, and a sense of belonging in a brand-new season of life.
After moving from Oklahoma to Georgia, everything felt new. New town. New home. New routines. Starting over in a different state can feel exciting, but it can also feel lonely. Karen already had years of CrossFit experience, but she did not know where she fit in this new area or if she would find a community that truly felt like home.
A friend recommended CrossFit Dwell, and it became one of the first places Karen visited after settling into Kennesaw.
That decision changed far more than her fitness.
Finding More Than a Gym
Karen says she knew she needed more than exercise after the move. She needed people. She needed relationships. She needed a place where she could feel connected.
From the very first day, she felt welcomed.
“The community of friends made me feel welcome from day one,” she shared. “They are some of my closest friends.”
Anyone can walk into a gym and see barbells, rowers, and workouts written on a whiteboard. But what truly makes a place special is the people inside of it. Karen quickly realized CrossFit Dwell was different. Yes, there was hard work and challenging workouts, but there was also encouragement, kindness, and genuine support.
She remembers feeling almost immediately like she had found where she was supposed to be.
As the weeks turned into months, the workouts became about much more than fitness. They became moments of shared struggle, laughter, growth, and connection. The people around her were no longer just workout partners. They became friends who celebrated victories together and supported one another through difficult seasons.
Strength at Every Age
At 64 years old, Karen understands something many people quietly wonder about before walking into a CrossFit gym:
“Will I fit in?”
For many adults, especially as they get older, starting or continuing fitness can feel intimidating. Social media often highlights younger athletes lifting huge weights or moving at lightning speed. It is easy to think you have to already be fit or strong before you begin.
Karen wants people to know that is not true.
“Walking into a gym is the most difficult part,” she says. “Don’t fear trying something new. Scaling can make all the difference.”
That mindset has helped her continue to grow stronger and more confident. Since joining CrossFit Dwell, Karen says she has become “more willing to try hard things.” She is especially proud of her endurance and her willingness to keep going even when workouts become challenging.
That determination matters.
Fitness in your 60s is about continuing to build strength, mobility, endurance, and confidence so you can fully live your life. Karen understands that deeply.
She also understands that maintaining and improving strength as you age is not always easy. She says one of her biggest challenges has been continuing to see strength gains while getting older. But instead of giving up, she keeps showing up.
That consistency is one of the biggest reasons she continues to thrive.
Fitness for Real Life
For Karen, CrossFit directly impacts the life she wants to live outside of the gym.
Today, she often helps care for her two granddaughters, and she treasures being able to actively participate in their lives.
“Every lift, every squat, every carry, and every diverse workout has allowed me to become a fit and strong grandmother,” she said.
That is what functional fitness is really about.
It is about lifting grandchildren safely. Carrying groceries without pain. Walking confidently. Getting up and down off the floor. Traveling. Playing. Moving freely. Staying independent.
Karen wants her granddaughters to see strength and joy in aging. She wants to show them that getting older does not mean slowing down and sitting on the sidelines.
CrossFit has helped her do exactly that.
The strength and endurance she has built at CrossFit Dwell have also given her confidence to pursue new activities and passions, including golf and pickleball. The mobility, balance, and fitness she has gained inside the gym have helped her enjoy life outside of it even more.
That is one of the beautiful things about functional fitness. The goal is not simply to get better at workouts. The goal is to improve your quality of life.
A Community That Shows Up
Karen shared that during difficult personal seasons for her family, the people at CrossFit Dwell showed up for her in ways she will never forget.
“They reminded me that true strength is not simply physical,” she said. “It is relational. It is spiritual. It is the quiet act of carrying one another through difficult moments.”
That kind of support cannot be measured on a scoreboard.
It is built through shared experiences, consistency, and genuine care for one another. Over time, workouts become more than exercise. The gym becomes a place where people encourage each other through hard reps, hard days, and sometimes hard seasons of life.
Karen describes CrossFit Dwell as grounding, healing, and a place of belonging.
In a world where many people feel isolated and disconnected, community matters more than ever. Having people who know your name, cheer you on, and genuinely care about your wellbeing can change your life in ways that go far beyond fitness.
Looking Ahead
Karen has no plans of slowing down.
Her goals moving forward are simple: continue adding sessions to her routine, maintain her strength and endurance, and keep showing up consistently.
That mindset is important because it reminds us that fitness is not a short-term project. It is a lifelong investment in health, independence, and quality of life.
Karen’s story is also a reminder that it is never too late to start something new, try something challenging, or find a community where you belong.
Today, one of her favorite things is seeing new people walk through the doors at CrossFit Dwell because she remembers exactly how that first day felt. Now she gets to offer the same encouragement and welcome that was given to her.
And that may be one of the most powerful parts of her story.
You Don’t Have to Be “Fit Enough” to Start
So many people delay starting because they are afraid they are too out of shape, too old, too inexperienced, or too intimidated.
Karen would tell you otherwise.
You do not have to be perfect to begin.
You simply have to walk through the door.
At CrossFit Dwell, every workout can be adjusted to meet you where you are right now. Whether you are brand new to fitness, returning after years away, or simply looking for a supportive community, you do not have to figure it out alone.
The hardest part is often just getting started.
But as Karen discovered, sometimes walking into a gym becomes the beginning of friendships, confidence, strength, healing, and an entirely new chapter of life.
