Celebrating Billy’s CrossFit Journey: From Weight Loss Surgery to Half-Marathons

In June 2021, Billy walked into a CrossFit box for the very first time, and he was ready to take his fitness journey to the next level. Fresh off weight loss surgery, he was determined to succeed and knew he needed accountability to stay on track. What he found at CrossFit Dwell, however, was far more than he expected.

Starting Strong and Staying Committed

Billy joined our community a few months after receiving the green light from his doctor to begin more intense exercise. He was ready to change his life, but as anyone who has been on a fitness journey knows, starting can be intimidating. However, for Billy, this place wasn’t just a gym—it became a supportive community where he could thrive.

“It was so much more than I expected,” Billy said. “I really appreciate the help and guidance that all of the coaches have given me. I also can’t say enough about the gym family I get to spend time with every day. After a tough day at work, I always look forward to getting to spend time with everyone at CFD.”

From Barely Walking to Conquering Races

But what are his proudest moments? Simply finishing a tough workout. “The feeling of completing a really hard workout is something I’m most proud of,” Billy shared. That mindset—celebrating small wins and pushing through challenges—has helped him achieve remarkable results.

Strength and Progress

Billy has hit many personal records (PRs) since joining CrossFit Dwell. Here are just a few of his highlights:

  • Deka Trifecta Completed: This achievement alone speaks volumes about Billy’s grit and determination.
  • Spartan Races: He not only completed multiple races but shaved 16 minutes off his time compared to his first event.
  • Strength Training PRs: Billy’s steady progress in strength training is inspiring. Clean and jerk, push press, strict press, back squat, and push jerk—Billy’s list of barbell accomplishments keeps growing!

Facing Challenges Head-On

Like any fitness journey, Billy’s hasn’t been without its challenges. Lately, he’s been dealing with knee issues, which have made certain movements more difficult. But true to his determined spirit, Billy is focused on recovery and working toward a return to competition. He modifies movements as needed, but he is still making progress with every aspect of his fitness.

“My main goal right now is to get my knees back to where I can compete again,” he said. “Just keep moving—that’s the advice I’d give my past self or anyone else considering starting their fitness journey. Some of the workouts can be long and grueling, but just keep moving. Don’t stop.”

The Power of Community

One of the things Billy treasures most about CrossFit Dwell is the community. It’s not just about lifting weights or running laps—it’s about showing up, connecting with others, and celebrating each other’s wins. Whether it’s the encouragement of a coach or the camaraderie of his gym family, Billy’s experience has been shaped by the support he’s found here. Plus, he has regularly come to events such as our Chili Cook-Off/Family Game Night and our Christmas parties. He has been part of the CFD family in every way.

Looking Ahead

As Billy continues his fitness journey, his focus remains on recovery and regaining his competitive edge. But his story is already a testament to what’s possible with determination, consistency, and the right support system. From struggling to walk short distances to doing Spartan Races, Billy’s transformation is nothing short of inspiring.
