We love our group classes at CrossFit Dwell. They are fun, encouraging, and incredibly effective. But for some of our clients, personal training is the better fit even if it is just for a season.
If you’ve ever wondered whether personal training might be right for you, this post will help you understand why many people choose it and how it can help you move forward with confidence.
Let’s walk through a few of the most common reasons.
1. They Want Individual Attention
Group classes are designed to meet people where they are, but personal training takes that to a whole new level.
When you work one-on-one with a coach, everything is built around you:
- Your goals
- Your current fitness level
- Your injuries or limitations
- Your schedule
There’s no guessing. No wondering if you’re doing it right. No feeling like you’re trying to keep up with the group.
Instead, you get:
- Immediate feedback on your form
- Adjustments in real time
- A clear plan for progress
For many people, this level of attention builds confidence quickly. You’re not just working out. You are learning how to move well, safely, and effectively.
2. They Are Coming Back from Injury (or Working Around One)
This is a big one.
We work with people who are dealing with:
- Old injuries
- Recent surgeries
- Chronic pain
- Mobility limitations
While group classes can definitely be modified, some people feel more comfortable starting with personal training.
Why?
Because it allows us to slow things down and be very intentional.
In personal training, we can:
- Focus on proper movement patterns
- Strengthen weak areas
- Avoid movements that cause pain
- Progress at the right pace
There’s no pressure to move faster than your body is ready for.
This is especially helpful for people who feel nervous about getting hurt again. Personal training helps rebuild trust not just in your body, but in the process of exercising again.
3. They Prefer a More Flexible Schedule
Life is busy. We get it.
Between work, family, and everything else, it’s not always easy to make a set class time. Personal training offers more flexibility. Monica is one example of this. Through personal training twice a week, she has built incredible strength and she has been able to do it around her busy schedule.
With personal training, you can:
- Schedule sessions at times that work best for you
- Adjust when life gets hectic
- Stay consistent even when your routine changes
For many of our clients, this flexibility is the difference between working out consistently and not working out at all.
And consistency is what drives results.
4. They Want to Build a Strong Foundation First
Starting something new can feel overwhelming.
Walking into a group class for the first time can bring up a lot of questions:
- What if I don’t know the movements?
- What if I can’t keep up?
- What if I do something wrong?
Personal training removes that pressure.
It gives you a space to:
- Learn the basics
- Practice movements
- Ask questions
- Build confidence
If a client transitions into group classes, they feel prepared and capable.
They’re not just showing up to check a box. They know what they’re doing.
5. They Have Specific Goals
Some people come in with very clear goals:
- Lose a certain amount of body fat
- Get stronger in specific lifts
- Improve mobility
- Train for an event
Personal training allows us to dial in on those goals with precision.
Instead of following a general class workout, your sessions are designed specifically to help you get from where you are to where you want to be. Nancy, one of our personal training clients, had a goal of being fit enough for a cruise to Alaska to celebrate her 60th birthday. We were able to help her achieve that goal with two 30-minute sessions a week.
That kind of focus can make a big difference in both progress and motivation.
6. They Want Accountability
Let’s be honest. Most of us do better when someone is expecting us to show up.
Personal training provides a high level of accountability. Jane is one such client. For some time, personal training worked best for her busy life. It gave her the accountability she wanted to lay a great foundation!
In personal training, you have:
- A scheduled time
- A coach waiting for you
- A plan already prepared
It’s much harder to skip when someone is in your corner, ready to help you succeed.
And over time, that consistency builds momentum.
7. They Simply Prefer a More Private Workout Environment
Not everyone loves working out in a group setting, and that is okay.
Some of our clients, like Amanda, just feel more comfortable training without a room full of people around them.
It might be because they:
- Feel self-conscious starting out
- Don’t enjoy the noise or pace of a group class
- Prefer a quieter, more focused environment
- Like having space to move at their own speed
Personal training provides that space.
It allows you to focus on your workout without distractions or comparisons. There’s no pressure to keep up with anyone else. No feeling like eyes are on you.
Just you, your coach, and a plan.
For many people, this makes the entire experience more enjoyable. When you enjoy it, you’re much more likely to stick with it.
Is Personal Training Right for You?
Here’s the truth: there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to fitness.
Some people thrive in group classes right away. Others benefit from personal training. And many do a combination of both over time.
If you:
- Feel unsure where to start
- Want more guidance
- Are working around an injury
- Need a flexible schedule
- Prefer a more private setting
- Or just want a more personalized approach
Personal training might be exactly what you need right now.
And it doesn’t have to be forever. For many of our clients, it’s a stepping stone, a way to build confidence and create a strong foundation before transitioning into group classes.
