Why your fitness tracker isn’t the best measure of your progress
If you’ve ever finished a workout and checked your watch, hoping to see a big number next to “calories burned,” you’re not alone. It’s natural to want proof that you worked hard. And many fitness apps and trackers feed the idea that more calories burned equals a better workout.
But here at CrossFit Dwell, we take a different approach.
We don’t chase calories burned. Instead, we chase things that last: strength, power, mobility, confidence, and a body that serves you well in everyday life.
Here are 5 reasons we don’t measure your progress by the number on your watch, and what we focus on instead.
1. Fitness Trackers Are Often Wrong About Calories Burned
Let’s start with the science: fitness trackers are not as accurate as you think.
Studies have shown that many wearables, like Apple Watch, Fitbit, or Garmin, can be off by up to 27–93% when estimating calories burned. (Source)
That means if your watch says you burned 500 calories, the real number might be way higher or way lower. It depends on your age, weight, muscle mass, and the type of workout you did.
Instead of putting all your trust in a device that guesses, we focus on how your body actually performs and feels. That’s where the real progress shows up.
2. Chasing Calories Keeps You Focused on the Short-Term
Burning calories might feel satisfying in the moment, but it’s a short-term mindset. It’s like trying to “earn” your food or “punish” yourself for a treat.
However, at CFD, we are playing the long game.
We want you to build:
- Muscle, which boosts your resting metabolism.
- Mobility, so you move well and avoid injuries.
- Power, so you can jump, run, and lift with confidence.
- Stamina, so you can keep going at the gym and in life.
Instead of measuring progress by a number on your wrist, we look for progress in the gym: heavier lifts, faster runs, better form, more confidence.
3. Strength Training Doesn’t Always Burn a Ton of Calories, But It Changes Your Body
Let’s be honest. Lifting weights might not burn as many calories during the workout as a cardio-only session. That’s why some people worry it’s “not enough.”
But here’s the truth: muscle changes everything.
Building muscle:
- Increases your metabolism (you burn more calories at rest).
- Improves your body composition (less fat, more tone).
- Supports your bones and joints.
- Helps you age better.
That’s why our workouts mix strength and conditioning. We’re not trying to make you tired. We’re trying to make you stronger.
4. Your Body Is Smarter Than Your Watch
A calorie count doesn’t tell you how much you improved your balance. It doesn’t track how many squats you did with great form. It doesn’t notice that you ran without stopping today, or that your back didn’t hurt when you picked up your groceries.
Your body knows, even if your watch doesn’t.
We are more interested in these wins:
- You lifted 10 pounds heavier than last month.
- You got your first push-up from your toes.
- You showed up even when you didn’t feel like it.
- You can carry all your groceries in one trip.
- You feel more energy, more peace, and more confidence.
These are the things that change your life, not just the number of calories burned.
5. Movement Is a Gift, Not a Transaction
Many people have learned to treat exercise like a punishment for eating. But movement should never be a transaction. It’s not something you “do” to “burn off” a treat or “earn” your dinner.
Exercise is a gift to your brain, your heart, your bones, your stress levels, and your future self.
We want our members to fall in love with what their bodies can do, not how many calories they can burn. We want you to build a relationship with fitness that’s joyful and sustainable.
So What Should You Track?
If you want to track progress (and we love celebrating progress), here are some better options:
- Workout consistency: How many classes do you attend each week?
- Strength goals: Can you lift more weight with good form?
- Mobility improvements: Is your range of motion better?
- Sleep quality and mood: Do you feel more energized?
- Body composition: Are you building muscle and reducing fat?
- How you feel in your clothes: Do you feel more confident?
We encourage our members to celebrate these things because they’re meaningful, measurable, and motivating.
It’s Time to Look Beyond Calories Burned
You are not a machine. You are not a math equation.
You are a strong, capable human being, and your body is more than a calorie counter.
We are here to help you build lifelong strength, lasting habits, and a body that lets you live fully.
So if your watch says you didn’t burn “enough”… ignore it.
You showed up. You worked hard. You’re changing your life, one rep at a time.
