From Fear to Confidence: Ann’s Life-Changing Journey at CrossFit Dwell

When people think about starting a fitness program, they often focus on the physical challenges ahead. But for many, the biggest obstacle isn’t the workout itself. It is taking that very first step through the door.

For Ann, that first step toward a life-changing journey took courage.

Today, Ann is stronger, healthier, more confident, and an active part of the CrossFit Dwell community. But when she first considered joining, she was filled with uncertainty.

A Desire for Better Health

Ann joined CrossFit Dwell in March 2025 after recovering from a broken ankle and wrist. She had completed physical therapy, but she knew her journey wasn’t over.

“I wanted to get in better shape,” Ann explains. “It was obvious to me that I needed to keep working on my health.”

At the same time, Ann had recently become a grandmother. She wanted to be able to fully enjoy that role without physical limitations holding her back.

“I wanted to be able to carry my grandchildren and get down and up from the floor while playing and looking after them.”

Like many people, especially those who haven’t exercised in a group setting before, Ann was nervous about joining a CrossFit gym.

In fact, she laughs when she talks about how long it took her to finally sign up.

“It is embarrassing, but it took me about two months before I decided to join after talking with Natalie a dozen times.”

Fortunately, she found someone willing to answer every question she had.

“Natalie was so patient answering all my questions.”

That patience helped Ann take the leap, and she’s glad she did.

Exceeding Expectations

Many people walk into a gym worried they’ll be judged, left behind, or expected to perform at a level they’re not ready for.

Ann quickly discovered that CrossFit Dwell was nothing like that.

“CrossFit Dwell exceeded my expectations in so many ways.”

What stood out most was the support she received from the coaches.

“All the coaches were so encouraging and supportive. They were so patient with me while I asked them to show me again and again how to do the exercise.”

Learning new movements can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never done them before. But Ann never felt rushed or embarrassed.

“The coaches would patiently correct me when I did an exercise the wrong way and would work with me till I got it correct.”

She also appreciated that the workouts could be adjusted whenever necessary.

“When I had an injury, they scaled the exercise back or had me do different exercises to help me heal.”

Rather than feeling like she had to fit into a program, the program was adapted to fit her needs.

“The coaches were always positive, telling me I could do it!”

More Than Just Fitness

While Ann has experienced many physical improvements, some of the biggest changes have gone beyond strength and fitness.

She is stronger overall and enjoys better health. Her balance has improved significantly, and she can now move with greater confidence.

“I am able to get on the floor and get back up without difficulty.”

That may sound simple, but for many older adults, maintaining that ability is incredibly important for independence and quality of life.

Ann has also surprised herself with what she’s capable of doing.

“I can do exercises I never thought I would be able to do being a senior citizen like squats, lunges, lifting weights, etc.”

Perhaps most importantly, she enjoys coming to the gym.

“I am a happier person going to the gym.”

That’s because CrossFit Dwell has become more than a place to exercise.

It has become a community.

Finding Friends and Encouragement

When asked what she is most proud of, Ann didn’t mention a personal record or a fitness milestone.

Instead, she talked about the people.

“I love the coaches and friends that I have made at the gym and how positive and encouraging everyone is.”

The friendships she has built have become one of the most meaningful parts of her experience.

“The fellow gym members were always rooting me on and telling me what a good job I had done.”

That support created an environment where Ann looked forward to coming to the gym.

“This welcoming and uplifting environment made me want to come to the gym to visit with my friends and encourage them, too.”

Whether she’s traveling or helping care for her grandchildren, Ann knows she always has a place waiting for her when she returns.

“I always tell the coaches I will be back as I head out to take care of my grandkids or travel. CrossFit Dwell always welcomes me back with open arms and helps me get back to exercising and getting healthier.”

Continuing to Improve

Even with all the progress she’s made, Ann still has goals she’s working toward.

“Currently, I am trying to improve my burpees, deep knee bends, and pull ups.”

Her commitment to improvement shows that fitness is not about reaching a finish line. It’s about continuing to grow stronger and healthier over time.

Looking ahead, Ann hopes to keep building on the progress she’s already made.

“I would like to see myself continue to get stronger and healthier.”

She also hopes more older adults will discover the benefits she has experienced.

“I would love to see more senior citizens like myself join CrossFit Dwell.”

Advice for Anyone Who Is Nervous

If Ann could go back and talk to the version of herself who spent two months debating whether to join, she knows exactly what she would say.

“Don’t be afraid to join CrossFit Dwell. It has been a life changer for me!”

She wants others to know that you don’t have to be fit before you start. You don’t have to know all the exercises. You don’t have to be young.

You simply need the willingness to begin.

“It has given me a gym community.”

For Ann, CrossFit Dwell provided more than workouts. It provided confidence, strength, friendships, support, and a healthier future.

And it all started with one decision to walk through the door.
