The holiday season is here again! The lights, music, family gatherings, and delicious food make this time of year so special. But let’s be honest. Between shopping, parties, and travel, it’s also the time when most people let their healthy habits slide. Workouts get skipped, sleep gets short, and nutrition often takes a backseat.
But here’s the truth: there’s no better time to stay consistent with your fitness than during the holidays. Staying active this time of year helps you manage stress, keep your energy up, and head into the new year feeling strong. It also keeps you from having to start over in the new year.
At CrossFit Dwell, we know how easy it is to lose momentum during the busy season. That’s why we encourage our members to focus on progress, not perfection. You can absolutely enjoy the holidays and still take care of your health. Here’s how.
1. Schedule Your Workouts Like Appointments
Once November hits, your calendar fills up fast. Holiday events, family gatherings, and last-minute errands all compete for your time. The best way to make sure your workouts happen? Put them on your calendar and treat them like non-negotiable appointments.
You wouldn’t skip a coffee date with a close friend or a meeting with your boss, so don’t skip this important meeting with yourself.
If mornings work best for you, get your workout done before the day gets away from you. If afternoons or evenings fit better, schedule them just as intentionally. A one-hour CrossFit Dwell class is only 4% of your day, and it will boost your mood and energy for the other 96%.
2. Choose Quick, Effective Workouts
Don’t have an hour to spare? No problem. Short workouts can still be incredibly effective. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or functional workouts (like what we do in our group classes) pack a lot of value into a short amount of time.
In just 20–30 minutes, you can get your heart rate up, build strength, and release endorphins that leave you feeling amazing. These kinds of workouts are perfect for the holidays because they’re:
- Efficient: You’ll get great results without spending hours in the gym.
- Flexible: You can do them almost anywhere.
- Motivating: The intensity keeps you focused and present.
Even if you’re traveling, a few rounds of bodyweight movements, such as squats, push-ups, and burpees, can make a big difference.
3. Involve Friends and Family
Fitness doesn’t have to be a solo activity! The holidays are all about connection, so make movement part of your family fun.
Invite your spouse, kids, or friends to join you for a CrossFit Dwell workout. We love seeing families sweat together because it builds accountability and great memories.
Or, find simple ways to move outside the gym:
- Take a walk after a big holiday meal.
- Go hiking with family.
- Play a game of tag or touch football with the kids.
When you make fitness social, it feels less like a chore and more like part of the celebration.
4. Stay Active in Small Ways
Even if you can’t get to the gym as often, look for small ways to stay active throughout your day.
- Park farther from the store entrance when shopping.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Do a few air squats or lunges between wrapping presents.
- Put on your favorite holiday music and dance while you clean or cook!
It all adds up. Staying active keeps your body moving, your metabolism humming, and your energy high.
5. Enjoy Holiday Foods Mindfully
The holidays wouldn’t be complete without festive food, and you should enjoy it! The key is to do it mindfully.
Instead of eating everything in sight, pause and ask yourself what you really want. Choose your favorite treats, savor them slowly, and stop when you’re satisfied.
You don’t need to restrict yourself or feel guilty for enjoying dessert. Just balance indulgent meals with nutritious ones and stay consistent with your workouts.
At CrossFit Dwell, several of our members pair training with simple nutrition guidance through Smart & Simple Nutrition. Learning to fuel your body properly makes it easier to enjoy special foods while still feeling great.
6. Give Yourself Grace
Perfection isn’t the goal. Consistency is.
Some days you’ll nail your workout and eat balanced meals. Other days you might skip the gym or have an extra cookie. That’s okay! What matters most is that you don’t let one off day turn into a full week or month of giving up.
Do your best, enjoy the season, and remember that progress happens one decision at a time.
7. Plan for a Strong Start to the New Year
If you stay active through the holidays, you’ll roll into January already feeling strong and confident. Instead of trying to “start over,” you’ll simply keep going and build on the consistency you maintained.
Now is a great time to set a goal for yourself. Maybe it is hitting a certain number of workouts before the year ends. Having something on the calendar keeps you focused and motivated.
